From A Sick Dog To A Full Freezer

Kimberly Gauthier, blogger from Keep the Tail Wagging ®  and author of the new book A Novice’s Guide to Raw Feeding for Dogs, began her journey to raw feeding like so many of us.  Her Border Collie/Great Pyrenees mix, Rodrigo, suffered from a myriad of health issues that she desperately wanted answers for.

It was her search for solutions, and her quest to impart the knowledge and experience she has gained about raw feeding from Rodrigo’s struggles, which culminate in this fantastic book.

New To Raw Feeding?

If you are someone who may be considering the switch to raw feeding, A Novice’s Guide to Raw Feeding for Dogs is for you!  As someone who has been on both sides, mistakenly believing I was a veteran raw feeder before realizing the hard way I didn’t know as much as I thought, I can relate to the position you are in.  Read Raw Food: A Decision Every Big Dog Owner Should Weigh for my journey to and from raw feeding with Sulley and Junior.

My guess is you worry about:

  • How to balance a raw food diet when kibble has been so easy (just scoop and serve),
  • The risk of foodborne illness from the bacteria in raw dog food,
  • Whether you can afford to feed raw (especially concerning to fellow giant breed owners),
  • And what, how and where to purchase this new raw food for your dog.

I know these are your concerns, because they were mine as well.  I still struggle with some of them.

Kimberly addresses all of these concerns, common raw feeding myths, and more in her book.  She presents them confidently and with facts and references for your background.  She covers the various raw feeding models, how to transition to a raw diet, raw feeding on a budget, the intricacies of poop, how to partner with your veterinarian to ensure your dog is cared for holistically, and so much more.

A Novice’s Guide to Raw Feeding for Dogs is really a Raw Feeding 101, 102 and 103 Course sandwiched between two covers.

Experienced Raw Feeder?

To be completely honest, I had low expectations that I would learn something new when I picked up this book.  I had fed Sulley a raw diet for two years and had been feeding both Sulley and Junior raw for about three weeks when I started reading it.  Novice didn’t describe where I was in my journey.

Boy was I wrong.

While I am the first to admit that I am far from an expert raw feeder, I am not a newbie either.  (If you want background on my rollercoaster ride of raw feeding with Sulley and Junior, read What to Do About Dog Food? First, Let Go Of The Guilt! and Raw Food: A Decision Every Big Dog Owner Should Weigh.)  Kimberly has not only been raw feeding her four large breed dogs for four years, she also runs a raw feeding blog, Keep the Tail Wagging ®, a Facebook group, Raw Feeders “Kicked Out” Club, and has been in the trenches of the raw feeding community since finding her passion in 2013.  As such, she is a wealth of knowledge.

A Novice’s Guide to Raw Feeding for Dogs goes beyond the basics of raw feeding to calculators, supplementation strategies, and, as an added bonus at the end, recipes for homemade bone broth, golden paste and more.

I found myself captivated late one night reading, utterly jazzed that I finally understood something that had confused me for years.  I messaged Kimberly right then and there and just had to share my epiphany.  Too nice to admit it, I’m sure she thought I was either a not-too-bright-big-dog-nut or someone who needs less caffeine at night.  I had several moments like this while reading this book.

So, experienced raw feeders, yes the word “Novice” is in the title, but this book is for you too!

Don’t allow your education to come from one place….Soak up as much knowledge from as many sources as possible so that you’re prepared to meet your dog’s needs.

1. “Love your dog enough to keep learning!” ~ Kimberly Gauthier

Raw feeding is as much a journey as parenting is.

It is the access to new and diverse information that allows us to continually make better and better choices for our dogs as we expand our own knowledge and experience.  This book is a fantastic first step, but there are many others listed below.

I have no doubt the reason for my struggles with Junior initially were due to my arrogance in thinking I knew all I needed to know about raw feeding.  Kimberly says “don’t allow your education to come from one place….Soak up as much knowledge from as many sources as possible so that you’re prepared to meet your dog’s needs.”

Commit to being a lifelong learner and an enthusiastic student for yourself and your family.

2. Be confident in your decision to raw feed your dog.

The amount of data and information contained in A Novice’s Guide to Raw Feeding for Dogs will no doubt serve to increase your confidence.

But no matter who you are or how much you know about raw feeding, you will come across those who disagree with you.

Stay strong.  Keep learning.  Reach out and network with other raw feeders to build a community of support around you.

We are all just doing the best we can with the information we have and the sources within our reach.

3. Do NOT Judge Others for the Decisions They Make About Raw Feeding.

As Stephen Covey says “seek first to understand, then to be understood.”

Throughout this book, Kimberly reminds us that we are all just “doing the best we can with the information we have and the sources within our reach.”  What works for one, may not work or even be feasible for another.

And while she has amassed vast knowledge and experience, Kimberly remains incredibly humble and non-judgmental in her approach in this book.  She presents even black and white facts as opportunities for greater understanding rather than hard and fast rules that must not be broken.
